Environmental considerations

Not only is the environment at risk from your actions but your buildings and premises may be under greater threat due to climate changes. Here are some common issues you should consider.

Oil storage

Corroded, damaged or faulty tanks and pipework can leak oil into the ground. This can pollute rivers, streams, and ground water; contaminating drinking water supplies; killing vegetation and affecting other properties or facilities.

Example precautions you can take if storing oil containers with capacity of 201 litres or more:

  • Using containers which meet official design standards
  • Using double skimmed, plastic, storage containers
  • Using trained professionals to install your oil storage tanks
  • Ensuring oil is stored in a location where the risk of impact is low, and it is not close to water courses
  • Provide impact protection through bollards or barriers
  • Provide secondary containment via drip trays or bunds (outer casing for containers) which are compulsory for fixed tanks
  • Provide a drip tray if the tank is remotely filled outside the secondary containment
  • Carryout regular checks for leaks or damage
  • Ensure all equipment is properly maintained

Flooding

Flooding of your building and premises could cause severe damage and disruption to your business. Here are some example precautions you can take:

  • Conduct the necessary checks and surveys to understand the risk of flooding for your premises
  • Protect your building
  • Make your buildings more resilient
  • Develop an emergency plan
  • Make suitable arrangements for recovery after a flood

Waste

  • Disposing of any waste properly helps to protect the environment.
  • Hazardous, electrical, or electronic equipment should be disposed or recycled safely
  • We recommend you contact your local council for further information on the correct procedures for any waste you need to dispose of
